Intro

Arrival day planning from Keflavík

Last updated ·

The Reykjanes peninsula is the first piece of Iceland almost every visitor sees — Keflavík International Airport (KEF) sits on it, the Blue Lagoon is a 20-minute drive away, and central Reykjavík is another 35 minutes east. How you plan arrival day around this area shapes how rested (or wrecked) you feel for the rest of the trip.

The two big decisions are: where do you sleep on the first night, and when do you slot the Blue Lagoon — if you slot it at all. Get those right and the rest is logistics.

Day choice

Should the Blue Lagoon be on arrival day?

Blue Lagoon on arrival day

  • Shower off the long flight
  • ~20 minutes from KEF, before Reykjavík
  • Pre-book a time slot 60–90 min after landing
  • Luggage storage available at the entrance

Blue Lagoon on departure day

  • Relaxed last stop on the way to the airport
  • Best if your flight is afternoon or evening
  • Plan to be out of the lagoon at least 3 hrs before flight
  • Easier with a rental car or pre-booked transfer

Sky Lagoon, on the Reykjavík side, is a popular alternative if Blue Lagoon is fully booked or doesn't fit your arrival window. Pricing, availability and opening status for both are handled on the operators' own sites.

Transfers

Getting from KEF to Reykjavík

Keflavík Airport is roughly 50 km from central Reykjavík — about a 45–50 minute drive on Route 41. The three normal options:

  • Airport shuttle bus (Flybus / Airport Direct) — cheapest, ~45 min to the BSÍ terminal in Reykjavík, often with hotel drop-off.
  • Private transfer or taxi — door-to-door, easiest with kids or late-night arrivals.
  • Rental car from KEF — most flexible, only worth it if you'll actually drive in your first 2–3 days.
  • Hotel near the airport — only really useful for very late arrivals or very early departures.

Stays

Reykjavík stay vs airport-area stay

For most visitors, Reykjavík is the better arrival-night base — more restaurants, more atmosphere, and the city is the natural launchpad for the Golden Circle and South Coast. Airport-area stays (Keflavík / Reykjanesbær) only beat Reykjavík when you're arriving very late or flying out very early.

Reykjanes

What else to see on the peninsula

The Reykjanes peninsula is a designated UNESCO Global Geopark and is often skipped in the rush to Reykjavík. A few highlights worth a half-day:

  • Bridge Between Continents — short walk across the rift between the North American and Eurasian plates.
  • Gunnuhver & Reykjanesviti — steaming geothermal area and Iceland's oldest lighthouse on the dramatic south-west coast.
  • Brimketill — natural rock pool carved by Atlantic surf (admire from the viewing platform — never climb down).
  • Fagradalsfjall / Sundhnúkar area — recent volcanic landscapes. Access depends entirely on current eruption status. Always check SafeTravel.is and Visit Reykjanes before going.

Blue Lagoon

Practical Blue Lagoon planning

The Blue Lagoon is privately operated and not affiliated with TravelDealCenter — we don't sell admission and don't display its prices. Three practical notes if you're planning a visit:

Blue Lagoon booking checklist

  • Book a timed entry slot on the official Blue Lagoon website, well in advance
  • Confirm current operating status before you travel — geothermal sites can close at short notice
  • Allow 60–90 min between landing and your entry time on arrival day
  • Leave the lagoon at least 3 hours before your departure flight
  • Use the on-site luggage storage if coming straight from KEF

Safety

Before you drive Reykjanes

Reykjanes is a young, active volcanic area. Always check SafeTravel.is, vedur.is and the Visit Reykjanes website for current eruption status, gas warnings and road closures before any peninsula drive — these are linked in the Official Iceland resources section below. TravelDealCenter does not publish current conditions or guarantee safety.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should I visit the Blue Lagoon on arrival day?
It can work well — the lagoon is only ~20 minutes from Keflavík airport and pre-bookable luggage storage is available at the entrance, so you can shower off a long flight before heading on to Reykjavík. Skip it on arrival day if you land late at night, are travelling with young children who need sleep, or if your itinerary already feels full. The Blue Lagoon is privately operated; pricing, availability and current opening status are handled on the official Blue Lagoon site, not by TravelDealCenter.
Should I pick up a rental car at Keflavík?
Pick up at KEF if you plan to drive in your first 1–3 days (Reykjanes, Golden Circle or South Coast). Skip it if you'll spend your first nights in Reykjavík on foot or on day tours — an airport bus (Flybus / Airport Direct) is usually cheaper and easier than parking in the city. You can always rent a car later from a downtown Reykjavík location for the road-trip portion of your trip.
Should I stay near the airport or in Reykjavík?
For most travellers, Reykjavík is the better arrival-night base — more restaurants, more atmosphere, and a natural launchpad for the Golden Circle and South Coast. Airport-area stays in Keflavík or Reykjanesbær mainly make sense for very late arrivals or very early departures, when avoiding the 45–50 minute drive each way is worth more than the city experience.
How much should I plan after a long flight?
Less than you think. Many travellers arrive on overnight flights and have been awake 20+ hours by the time they reach Reykjavík. A relaxed soak, an easy dinner, and an early night is a far better arrival plan than a packed sightseeing day. Save the long drives for day two or three when you've recovered.
What safety information should I check before driving Reykjanes?
Reykjanes is a young, active volcanic peninsula. Before any peninsula drive, check vedur.is (weather), umferdin.is (road conditions), safetravel.is (general travel safety and warnings) and the official Visit Reykjanes site for current volcanic and gas advisories. Do not rely on third-party blogs or social media for current eruption status — conditions can change within hours.
Do I need to pre-book the Blue Lagoon?
Yes. Blue Lagoon uses timed entry slots and is regularly sold out days or weeks ahead in summer and around Christmas. Book directly on the official Blue Lagoon website rather than third parties. Allow 60–90 minutes between landing and your entry time on arrival day, and leave the lagoon at least 3 hours before any departure flight.
